A puppy of around eight weeks old does not yet have full bladder or bowel control so you will have to make allowances for this. Your puppy will not be able to 'hold on' for more than around an hour. As you get to know your puppy, you will see a pattern with this and once you know when your puppy needs to go outside you will be able to let it out about 10 minutes earlier. The frequency of this will change depending on how much your pup has been eating and drinking. It's up to you to be aware of these changes. Some puppies are not able to hold on all night so you may have to get up and let them out. Or you could try leaving your puppy in a room such as the laundry with a designated elimination area that is away from where your puppy is sleeping. Put down some newspaper for your puppy to use. If our puppy wees on the carpet or your bed it's usually a result of having to 'hold on' for too long.

Most dogs are fairly fussy about where they want to eliminate and it's not anywhere near where they eat, sleep or play.

Training an Older Dog

The principle is the same as for training a puppy but you'll probably need to take it a little slower. Perhaps you are rescuing an older dog from a shelter or from a situation where your dog has been neglected?

You will definitely need to take it slowly for there may be bad habits that your dog will have to un learn before making progress. Remember to apply liberal doses of praise for the correct action. If your older dog has never been house trained then it will also be a challenge. Don't expect too much and exercise your patience. With persistence and patience you will get there!
